It has been stated that the landscape of hip-hop has changed. How do you view the current state of hip hop and where do you think you fit?

I think the current state is good. I just feel like the game is cycled. It kinda went in a full circle but the styles are always evolving. The hip hop fans have changed a lot. They’re attracted to different kinds of music now, but I think it’s in a cool place. And I think that I stand in it pretty well. I still have a lot of work to do but you know… I hold it down for myself.

I read a quote from you and essentially you were talking about you know how life’s low points help you build your faith that kind of leads to motivation and then helps you prep to be a leader. So, what are some of the major life situations that helped you prep for your musical success?

Well, being broke all my life and then makin’ money was a big thing that I had to learn from. When you’re not used to having it, you’re not used to saving it. It just isn’t in your mindset because you are so used to surviving without it. But then getting money and being able to take care of my family and be successful shaped me into a better person.

I’m going to switch gears a little bit. So who is on your playlist right now?

Um… my playlist? Um… funny cause… I listen to just old music like old old music… old Devin the Dude, old Jay Z music, Suga Free, DJ Quik. I’ve been listenin’ to a lot of funky shit like Da Brat, her "Funkdafied" album. I think I’m just gonna get more on some real funky shit with my next project so I’m just feelin’ the vibes now, trying to bring the funk back in a real way.

Who is someone that you have not yet met that you would love to meet? And what would you say to them?

I would want to meet Bob Marley um… You said what would I talk to them about? Damn… I don’t even know. It’s funny ‘cause I do meet and greets and I meet fans all the time. They walk up to me and they’re like shakin’ and they don’t know what to say. They listen to my music and want to come meet me because I probably seem like the ultimate homie, and then when they get around me they’re just super nervous because you really don’t know what to say. But, I think I would just want to have a real conversation OR wanna catch him having a real conversation with somebody else. If I could’ve had a moment like that you know or catch Pac (referencing Tupac) in the moment explaining something to somebody else with passion… not even talkin’ to me, but I just get to watch him… you know?

Right… so you just mentioned Tupac, so some people compare you to Tupac. Who would you say are your musical influences and why?

Pac is definitely an influence just because of the passion. I just like people with passion. I love Snoop because he has a passion… you know… you can feel his passion. You can feel Pac’s passion… you can feel Bob Marley’s passion. And those are the people I’m inspired by… Kendrick… Kendrick’s one of those to me… those new spirits that you can just feel his passion. I’m more of a fan than anything. So… I just like people who take themselves seriously.

So I’ve seen you rock like black and white tees, some Crooks… how would you describe your personal style?

Um… Shit… I don’t even know. I just be on like my little hippie shit. I just really like to be comfortable. I just don’t want to be somebody who tries too hard to look good, I just get fly when I can I do love fashion…But $50 shirts, $70 shirts, you can’t do that on the average. I’ll be wearin’ $60 white tees and I’m like what the fuck is happenin’?

Yeah, because you could probably get that somewhere for $5 and you rockin’ $60 plain white… that’s a blessing

Yeah… well don’t get me wrong. When I was buyin’ $5 t shirts, we still tried to make it as fly as we could… you know? We were fly on a budget… you know? You can be fly no matter what… so comfortable fly… that’s my style…. Comfortable fly

What is your ideal munchy meal?

Chicken tenders. I’m a chicken tenders kind of person. I’ll eat chicken tenders… everyday!

In your song False Reality, you talk about how guys don’t recognize that they’re “mistreating our queens.” How does Dizzy show love to a special lady?

I just love as much as I can and do better every day, and just be honest

Finally, what do you most want people to know about Dizzy Wright?

What will I want them to know? These days I don’t want nobody to know nothin’… naw… I’m playin’. No… I just want them to know that I’m a hard working artist with Funk Volume… really and to check out the platform and fuck with whatever they enjoy. I feel like most people who give my music a try if it’s their style of music… they fuck with it. You know? As long as they come out to the shows… show their support. I just have to continue to get that reach. I just want people to know that I’m just holdin’ it down over here at Funk Volume and to fuck with that music.
