Karmaloop Ikon: Chris Webby

Karmaloop's Exclusive Ikon Interview!

Fresh off of dropping his debut album "Chemically Imbalanced" and launching a nationwide tour of the same name, Connecticut-raised rapper Chris Webby is generating some serious hype. We recently christened him as an ambassador for our Karmaloop Ikon series, and it is no surprise why this audacious east-coast rapper is mega-deserving of the title.

What are you currently working on?

I just dropped my 11th project/debut album so I'm out on tour at the moment. I already started working on new music, but as of now it's still too early to tell what the next project will be. I just dropped 3 projects within the course of 1 year, I work fast.

Who or what are some sources of inspiration?

Aside from music, I draw a lot of inspiration from the books I read. On top of keeping my vocabulary as sharp as possible, reading allows me to immerse myself in a totally different world. I just finished re-reading Lord Of The Flies the other day and now I'm reading a book about the Rolling Stones. I like to keep a nice mix of fiction and non-fiction in rotation.

Who or what is your personal style inspiration?

Style wise I like to go for a mix of both comfort and vintage pop culture. I have various cartoon characters tattooed all over my body, so anything down that nostalgic lane always sparks my interest. I don't allow myself to get so concerned with what I'm wearing that it takes away from my focus on the music though. I feel like certain artists are forgetting that nowadays, and letting their musical content fall by the wayside while they play dress up. This is HipHop, not Zoolander.

What is the most important wardrobe item?

Hats with earflaps are definitely my signature item. I rocked one of those hats on my first mixtape cover, and my most recent album cover. They get a little hot on stage sometimes though. That forehead sweat is no joke. Snap Backs and a good belt

Give 3 words to describe your current style.

Steezy. Comfortable. Simple.

What is the biggest fashion faux-pas you’ve committed?

The fake chains I used to attempt to pull off in middle school were definitely not a good look. Big ass, gaudy fake silver/diamond pendants from the middle of the mall that used to loudly bang against the water fountain every time I got a drink of water at school.. Definitely an awesomely embarrassing time in my life.

What is the definition of an emcee?

Someone true to themselves who devotes the time and energy required to become a skillful lyricist, and rises to all occasions to prove their prowess on the mic if necessary. Someone who doesn't forget where they started, and remains humble and focused on their journey through the music industry.  Someone who accepts their role as a student of the game and never gets complacent, always trying to take their verbal skill set to the next level regardless of how successful they become. That's an emcee to me.

Biggest challenge and biggest win this year?

My biggest challenge this year was putting together a debut album that both satisfied my longtime hard core fanbase, while being able to appease new listeners and shed the "party weed rapper" image that I felt I was wrongfully labeled as from the beginning. Not that I don't party and smoke a solid amount of bud, but there's so much more to it than that. I think I accomplished this mission perfectly judging from the response I've heard thus. This is the first project I was able to step back from in a third person perspective and really say, "damn Web, you finally figured it out." So my biggest challenge would also be my biggest win in this case

What 3 Karmaloop brands would you want some gear from for the holidays?

The good folks at Entree LS always send me some of the dopest shit in my closet. Their sweatshirt game is on point as fuck. Breezy Excursion is another brand I mess with that always comes through with some fire gear for me. Then I would get some Reeboks.. Pumps are my favorite sneakers of all time. If I needed a bag to put all this new gear in, I would holler at Sprayground for a dope ass backpack
