It's Saturday night, November eight and the 30th Universal Zulu Nation Anniversary is underway in the heartland of hip hop, Harlem. Zulu Nation founder Afrika Bambaataa is walking through rooms carrying incense, offering props and positivity.

An estimated six hundred people have shown up to chill with the founding fathers of hip hop and watch new mcs and djs pay homage to the life. Grandmaster Caz is spinning funk breaks and scratching as an amateur steps to the mic. It's all love here; no pretention, no haters, just a dim industrial light bulb over some tables. The djs are spinning the same tracks they were twenty years ago, the old school breakers are expounding the same moves, the hungry mcs are just as hungry and that's what this weekend is about. Hip hop has remained untouched, pure.

"Universal Zulu Nation is a music, community service and arts organization founded in the USA by Afrika Bambaataa dedicated to improving and uplifting ourselves and our communities, all Zulu nation members should be involved in some activity that is positive and gives back to the community. Hip Hop music is our vehicle of expression." States the group's website. Afrika Bambaataa started the group in 1973 and is considered one of the godfathers of hip hop. Born and raised in the Bronx, Bambaataa joined the Black Spades Gang in his early teens. After years of learning how it is, he went on to form the Zulu nation dedicating the group to "music and above all, peace."
