Yet
again, Britain has produced a musician destined to
blow up in the U.S. Wales born singer Jem comes correct
with a refreshingly intuitive yet unapologetic album
as an alternative to the usual radio play list. This
songstress has clearly set herself above the rest
in her genre by expressing an ambient feminine feel
intertwined with ill beats and metal guitar riffs
that command booty shaking. Jem's album "It all
starts here" is a bold statement proving through
lyrics that women do in fact, know what's up.
Her
use of a filtered microphone in "Finally Woken"
adds a flavor of realism to this optimistic track
while showing her ingenuity as an artist and willingness
to experiment. Not only is she keeping up with the
times, she's defining them. "I always wanted
to make music that makes people bob their heads."
Her passion is infectious and contagious and even
if pop isn't your thang, this album is worth it's
weight. The first single was picked up by an LA radio
station in 2002 and her highly anticipated full album
drops in March 2004 and Jem's been anything but waiting
for destiny to find her in between.
She's
worked with music heavyweights such as Madonna (she
wrote track 6 on "American Life") and collaborated
with NY producers Ge-ology (Mos Def and Talib Kweli)
to produce some of the fresh inspiration tagged all
over the album. "This (album) is a snapshot of
emotions. I just want people to feel something."
The
track "Flying High" is performed with an
acoustic guitar adding to the eclectic feel the album
has as a whole and Jem's lyrics come out sounding
honest and real. It's obvious Jem writes for herself.
"I don't critique myself by what people might
think."
With
an entire career ahead of her, Jem promises to keep
it real. "This is what I've always wanted, it's
really rewarding and it's definitely time to be me."
