Earlier this year, the smash hit by Robin Thicke and Pharrell ignited criticism from Bridgeport Music and Marvin Gaye’s family, who alleged that “Blurred Lines” steals from Gaye’s song “Got To Give It Up” and Funkadelic’s “Sexy Ways.”
With all due respect to Marvin–we say fuck that. And not just because Pharrell is the homie. Don’t tell us Marvin wasn’t influenced by artists before him, too! All art is about repurposing the things we hear, see, feel into something uniquely our own. Nothing is original, everything has a precursor, and considering how many remixes we do here at GURU, we can’t call anyone out for borrowing liberally from old tracks.
As a more objective way to note the rampant nonsensical copyright litigation we’re surrounded by every day, we’ve prepared a protest song that includes samples from 5 chart toppers from the past 20 years, including “Blurred Lines.” Can you identify the others? Let us know in the comments.
