Lyric videos have come a long way since sing-alongs and bootleg-ass karaoke vids. Line over line of plain white text over a static blue background just doesn’t cut it anymore. These days, the words have to have a life of their own: twisting, flying, spinning into the frame with icy precision. A good lyric video is not only entertaining, it also has to give the viewer a deeper understanding of the song.

2013 saw a plethora of wildly creative lyric videos from artists at all levels and within all genres. From Angel Haze’s verbose club/EDM/trap banger “A Tribe Called Red,” to August Burns Red’s metal crusher “Spirit Breaker,” these new videos push the limits of how you can visually manipulate text to music.

We sifted through dozens of forward-thinking videos created this year to compile a list of the 13 most entertaining and imaginative lyric videos released this year. Enjoy, and let us know your favorite in the comments!
