Let Busta And Q-Tip Teleport You To The Golden Age With Their Mixtape, The Abstract And The Dragon

Busta and Tip’s lively video for “Thank You” gave us a sneak peek into what was to eventually to become their 28-track collaborative mixtape, The Abstract and The Dragon. Peppered with skits, remixes and previews, the project features appearances from heaps of rap-game-veterans including Redman, Weezy, Kanye, Talib Kweli, Raekwon, and Big Daddy Kane. The production on the mixtape is reminiscent of 90s boom bap: lots of Dilla-esque sirens, classic Q-Tip drums, and soulful, sample-heavy grooves. Busta and Q keep the lyrical content light. Both emcees are known for bringing a more playful, quirky vibe to their past work, and despite the somewhat grandiose title of the project, they keep it fun throughout.

Highlights include remixes for classics like “Vivrant Thing” and “Scenario,” a short but heartfelt J Dilla tribute skit, and the old-school-club-banger “For The Nasty.” At just over an hour long, this mixtape is perfect head-nodding music.
