In honor of the hallmark holiday that everyone loves to hate and hates to love I have compiled a list of the best Valentine’s Day jams you may not know yet. The list is separated into two sections so if you’re alone this holiday there are tracks for you as well.
Best Valentine’s Day Jams for couples:
This one is a classic by Luther Ingram titled “If Loving You is Wrong I Don’t Want to be Right”. This is for all those couples out there that aren’t supposed to be together. Even the promiscuous deserve a song right? So shout out to all you cheaters, home wreckers, and secret couples this one is for you. Although, somehow Ingram’s voice is so powerful and smooth it almost makes it seem okay. Listen up all you girls who “give your love to a married man”.
If you have dinner plans with your girl tonight or a romantic evening planned this one is for you. Barry White released “Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up” in 1973 off his album Stone Gon’. This dude’s voice though! That is really all you have to say about Barry White, this song carries on and creates a sexy vibe for any evening. I still remember being very young when Barry White died. My father got me into soul music at a young age and that day is one I will never forget. Guys, a good piece of advice is to pick up this record at the local record store and drop the needle when your girl walks in the room. As corny as it is, it works. Enjoy the smoothest voice in soul here.
All you lovebirds gather round; this one is definitely for you. “Sweet Love” by Anita Baker is such a classic beautiful love song. Make sure to listen for the awesome chord progression in the beginning. All in all this is a great go to love tune for any occasion. All the couples out there deep in love will enjoy this one for sure. Anita Baker’s album Rapture is one of those albums you don’t want to put down. It is steady hit after hit and this happens to be one of those hits. Enjoy lovebirds.
This one is for the rare girl whose name happens to be Bernadette. Okay, I know that’s a force but I just couldn’t leave this out. I recently was put on to this song from a buddy of mine and haven’t stopped listening since. This is a party type love song that hypes you up. The vocals in this song are unreal. The way The Four Tops harmonize creates a background to the song while the lead pours out his heart about sweet “Bernadette”. His voice is super powerful too. If this song does not hit the spot I really don’t know what will. I can’t stop shouting it- Bernadetteeee! Check it out party animals.
I wanted this list to not contain the most common love songs you’ve ever heard. That is why I didn’t include “Sexual Healing” by Marvin Gaye or “Love and Happiness” by my favorite soul singer, the reverend Al Green. However, I realized I am including way too many men singers in this list. This song is by The Supremes who just ooze swag. They are too cool, for real, look them up. As for the song, it is pretty self-explanatory and super catchy entitled, “Baby Love”. I’m sure you know it. This one is for you ladies who can sing like this…
Here’s the part where things get slightly depressing, kind of, but only if you make them that way. Here are my top 5 soul songs for all you single guys and gals out there.
“If You Don’t Know Me By Now” by Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes is another classic I remember listening to at a very young age and it never left me. It is the kind of song that just catches you and never lets go. It is unforgettable. This track pretty much is about a relationship where the girl just doesn’t get it. Harold Melvin urges his girl to pretty much smarten up in the coolest way possible. The message of the song is fix things or it’s never going to work. You can all learn from this one. I also love the chorus of this song- “If you don’t know me by now, you will never never never know me”. Those harmonies doe!
Are you alone? Are you sad, depressed, and find yourself envious of other couples? Is this beginning to sound like a corny infomercial? If you answered yes to all of these this song is totally for you. Al Green’s “Tired of Being Alone” is so cool because the message sounds sad but the music behind it is actually quite uplifting. The juxtaposition of this song is unreal. Al Green is tired of being alone and he’s letting it all out. This dude’s voice has always amazed me for some reason. He goes from smooth and soulful to a high falsetto that even shocks the microphone. If you’re tired of being alone listen here:
This man lived one tough life but he was one of the best. Teddy Pendergrass was actually also in Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes but had a successful solo career as well. He ended up in a wheel chair paralyzed due to an accident but never lost his soulful voice. The feel of this song is cool, calm, smooth, bluesy, and relaxing all at once. This is for the lovers who are letting go and moving on. After all “it looks like another love TKO”. Classic! Check it out:
Is infidelity the problem in your relationship? This one goes out to you. What’s awesome about this song is the way the lyrics unfold. Bill Withers hits the nail on the head. Anyone who has been cheated on feels this way. This track released in 1972 is so funky it almost doesn’t feel like a love song. Bill Withers has such a unique style and rhythm that you can always tell him apart from other soul artists. This song will give you shivers and make you feel skeptical about any past or present girlfriend. If your girl is acting sus listen to this one and then drop her like a bag of potatoes for messing with your brain! Thanks Bill.
I want this last song to be uplifting. That is why I chose “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Whitney Houston. Given this song is nothing like the others, it just happened to be suggested on YouTube and for good reason. Hell ya! This song is too good. This song isn’t “super souly” but it is uplifting. I can’t write anymore I wanna go dance with somebody. Dude, this song like forces you to dance. Enjoy your Valentine’s Day. Let me know what your favorite song for today is below.
