The most anticipated part of the BET Hip Hop Awards was the TDE cypher, which most notably featured Kendrick calling out Drake. BET leaked the cypher a few weeks ago in an effort to build hype for the show, and their effort succeeded. These things are usually pretty corny and obviously staged–nobody is getting fooled into thinking this is a freestyle–but props to BET for keeping the product placement only *slightly* intrusive. With that said, Kendrick killed his verse, and, as he’s been doing lately, took a shit all over the industry.
The Drake diss was not-so-subtly hidden in the lines “Nothing’s been the same since they dropped ‘Control’/And tucked a sensitive rapper back in his pajama clothes/Your shit never penetrates/Pin the tail on the donkey, boy you been a fake.” Unsurprisingly, Drake shed a tear when he heard that.
Some other choice lines: “I got my thumb on Hip Hop and my foot in the back of yo ass/Aftermath get the last laugh” and “I say ‘Hold up wait a minute’/Your career ain’t shit less you got some Kendrick in it.”
What’s striking about all this is that it’s true. With rare exception, Kendrick has been at the front of any hip-hop discussion for the last two years, and this verse shows why. He’s the most talented MC in the game and he knows it. At this point it would be a shock if he fell off the throne.
One time earlier this year, Carissa Rossi interviewed Kendrick and when she didn’t know what the show Martin is, he walked out on the interview. For real, though:
