Back in 2012, independent rap was still developing it’s identity. Yeah, the idea of not signing to a label and doing it yourself was cool in theory, but could any rapper really make it big like that? What was doing to differentiate #strugglerappers from the good ones?
Well, Stalley was a step ahead of the cruve. Coming to KarmaloopTV’s own @illusivemedia for direction on this video, he showed why independent artists had more than a fighting chance. Recruiting the DMV’s Wale, these two spitters go back and forth while the city plays out around them, trading upper echelon bars over gritty NYC scenes. Believe it or not, but that lighting effect you see was actually created by using tiny flashlights which the KarmaloopTV purchased from a local drugstore the day of the shoot. Kinda crazy, right?
