On Monday, Kanye went on writer Bret Easton Ellis’ podcast and blasted Zappos, saying they sell “a shit product.” Expanding on that, Kanye said he “got into this giant argument with the head of Zappos [...] he’s trying to tell me what I need to focus on. Meanwhile, he sells all this shit product to everybody, his whole thing is based off of selling shit product.” Harsh words from the man who says design can save the world. Additionally questionable remarks considering the CEO of Zappo is worth considerably more than the rapper.
So what should you do when Kanye calls your product “shit”? Zappos had a creative idea, creating a literal shit product page, where you can buy some shit for a mere 100k. The description starts strong, saying “interested in buying sh-t product? You’ve come to the right place! Here at Zappos.com, we happily sell sh-t products to everybody!” From there, it’s kind of a train wreck, continuing with “this is the throne, everyone has been watching. Whether you’re #1 or #2, your clique will show no mercy, even in Paris.” Uh, what? You can’t just string together a bunch of Kanye song and album references in nonsensical sentences and then drop the metaphorical mic and expect people to lol. The epitome of a great idea with horrible execution. Regardless, we respect any company that’s able to laugh at itself.
