Over the past 40 years, Vans has become perhaps the most influential brand in streetwear, with both apparel and footwear lines that are international staples. Vans' first release was their #44 deck shoe in 1966, which is still sold today as the Authentic. Skateboarders immediately took to wearing Vans due to their durability and sticky soles, and in the 1970s the brand began working with skaters in order to design casual shoes that were refined enough for a night out and tough enough for a day at the skate park. In the 1980s Vans slip-ons became a cultural phenomenon after being worn by actor Sean Penn in the movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."
